The Kappa Theta Chapter of Vanderbilt University was founded on April 26,1975. Floyd Jones, instrumental in the founding of Kappa Theta, and Brother Zenoch Adams, District Director for the State of Tennessee at that time, believed in establishing a chapter rooted in the principles of excellence and achievement at Vanderbilt University. There were twelve young men, known as 'Genesis 12,' who began Alpha on Vanderbilt's campus:
Our Founders: Gerald Thomas Washington, Edward Lee Whaley, Jr., Jerome Kearney, Walter L. Fields III, Terry Jerome German, Sircedrick L. Liggens III, Sherman E. Wilson, Elleston Craig Rucker, Larry Douglas Brandon, Lee L.J. Ingram, Douglas Renard Norman, and Wilmoth H. Baker.
Since it s founding, over eighty young men have been initiated through the Kappa Theta chapter. Together, the brothers of that Kappa Theta Chapter, past and present, are dedicated to the principles of excellence and achievement, holding high the light of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. The Kappa Theta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., boasts a tradition of student leadership on the campus of Vanderbilt University. Brother Kito Huggins served as the third African American president of the student government association, followed by Brother Jamaal Nelson held the position for the 1998-1999 school year. Additionally, various student organizations have been either founded or led by the men of Kappa Theta. Vanderbilt Voices of Praise Choir was founded by Brother Kito Huggins. Yes You Can, a community service organization, was founded by Brother Jamaal Nelson. Campus Progress was founded by Brother Corey Ponder and was named Chapter of the Year during its first year. Brother Jeremy Gunn founded Vanderbilt’s NAACP chapter. Several graduate brothers of Kappa Theta can be found in law schools, business schools, medical schools, and divinity schools throughout the country. We are professors in academia, businessmen, engineers, consultants, foundation directors, and upstanding men in the community. The goal of the Kappa Theta Chapter of Vanderbilt University is to continue the tradition of achievement, leadership, scholarship, and excellence. With fourteen brothers strong, the Kappa Theta Chapter will uphold the light of Alpha Phi Alpha through its dedication to serving the community, Vanderbilt campus, and the fraternal organization.
Black Alumni Unity, Networking, Scholarships, Leadership, & Diversity
"My challenge," John Hope Franklin says, "was to weave into the fabric of American history enough of the presence of blacks so that the story of the United States could be told adequately and fairly."
Our challenge is to weave into the fabric of University history enough of the presence of black students/alumni so that the story of higher education can be told adequately and fairly. - Vandynow Foundation™ - Black Alumni Alliance, Inc.
